Happy Labor Day!
Happy Friday! It’s time for another holiday – this time it’s Labor Day. Like most businesses, Syncquip will be taking Monday off to observe this holiday. For urgent requests, please get in touch today or first thing Tuesday morning!
What is Labor Day?
According to the Department of Labor: “Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.” Although we as a nation have celebrated Labor Day for hundreds of years, there is still some doubt as to who originally proposed Labor Day.
Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.” Others believe it was Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, who founded the holiday.
What Does it Signify to the Average American?
Unofficially, we tend to recognize Labor Day as the end of summer. By this time, most children and young adults are back in school. The weather will begin to turn cooler soon, and we’ll be starting our bonfires.
For us in the HVAC world, we see it as the end (almost) to our major air conditioning season. There will be a little peace before the pre-winter rush for heating maintenance and new building heat installation hits. So, get your grilling gear together and head outdoors for the last guaranteed warm-weather holiday! Have a wonderful weekend, and we’ll see you back at your labors next Tuesday!
